Political parties have cried foul over the selection process for Ekurhuleni’s new city manager as the municipality moves to find a replacement for its controversial former manager. During a city council meeting on Wednesday, opposition parties the EFF and the DA raised concerns about the appointment process at the end of August. Ekurhuleni’s former manager, Khaya Ngema, left his position shortly after the local government elections. His appointment had been at the centre of controversy after allegations that his contract had been extended illegally in 2012 and that he had been involved in tender irregularities that cost the city hundreds of millions. During his term, the city’s former mayor, Mondli Gungubele, had defended Ngema, describing him as a good man.
