The delay in the government’s migration from analogue to digital broadcasting means state-owned signal distribution company Sentech will have to invest in refreshing its analogue infrastructure even though it is due to be retired shortly. Sentech is responsible for rolling out the digital terrestrial television infrastructure network. Another cost involved in the migration delay for Sentech — its chairman Magatho Mello said Tuesday in a briefing to Parliament’s telecommunications and postal services committee on the 2015-16 annual report — was that the company was having to maintain two parallel infrastructures pending the finalisation of the migration to digital broadcasting. One of the reasons for the delay has been conflict over the configuration of the set-top boxes that will convert the digital transmission into analogue for old television sets.
