Exports of South African-made vehicles dipped last month despite strong orders for some makes, but manufacturers are hoping for a surge in exports in coming months. Export sales - 32,876 units - dropped 6.5% compared with September last year. But the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa said this week it expected stronger momentum in exports by the end of the year, and a better performance next year. "For the year and into 2017, new vehicle exports should contribute positively to South Africa's balance of payments, reinforced by lower vehicle imports on the back of declines in the domestic market," it said. Manufacturers recording the best export figures last month were Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Toyota. Mercedes-Benz South Africa had not responded to requests for comment by the time of publication.
