At a time in our history when despair is the apposite response to the obduracy and venality of public officials, SA’s news organisations may be our only remaining repository of hope; at least we know who the perpetrators are.The first event was the vocal and articulate protest by Lotus FM listeners against SABC chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng’s decree that, more or less henceforth, the music content on all radio stations in the public broadcaster’s fleet had to be local. This offence against liberty and its resultant unfair discrimination against a minority group, Lotus FM’s mainly Indian South African listeners, is contrary to the SABC’s mandate as a public broadcaster, contradicts the Constitution and rubbishes this count...
