The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link is the first rapid rail network in Africa that links Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane and includes a designated link to the OR Tambo International Airport in the Gauteng Province. The total route, which includes ten stations and 80 km of track, is available seven days a week between 05:30 and 20:30. To accommodate airport passengers, this service is operational between 04:50 and 21:04.
The use of reloadable smart cards, the Gold Card, ensures a safe cash-free ticketing system and makes travelling on the Gautrain quick and convenient. Passengers can buy their Gold Cards at any Gautrain station or approved service outlets. The integrated ticketing system allows the passenger to pay for their train rides, bus rides and parking with a single card. Buses and midibuses are available weekdays to transport passengers to and from all stations excluding the OR Tambo station.
The System offers a fast, convenient, safe and efficient public transport service. It takes 15 minutes to travel from Sandton to OR Tambo International Airport on the Gautrain and 35 minutes from Pretoria in Tshwane to Park Station in Johannesburg. As from 11 August 2014, the Gautrain’s airport service (Sandton to OR Tambo International Airport) was improved with earlier trains in the mornings and later trains in the evenings.
Since the start of operations in June 2010, the Gautrain system (trains, busses and parking) has performed extremely well. Approximately 55 000 passenger trips and 23 000 bus passenger trips are recorded on a daily basis.
The service has delivered an excellence of 99% train availability and 98% train punctuality.
Gautrain does not compete with other modes of public transport, such as taxis and buses, which all have an important role to play in the total transport system. The service comprises of a fleet of modern low-entrance and low-emission buses with comfortable seating, providing feeder and distribution services to and from the Gautrain stations. The municipal Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) services are also integrated with Gautrain at some of the Gautrain stations.
Gautrain’s brand unlocks the ambition of Gauteng residents and their upwardly mobile aspirations. These people are driven, hungry for success and anxious to get ahead. The Gautrain brand is supported by three core values:
Freedom: Easy mobility for commuters, using different modes of public transport;
Pride: In a system that works and is reliable and punctual;
Relationships: Connecting people to each other and places of interest.
Gautrain Management Agency
The vision of the Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) is to provide an integrated, innovative and efficient transport system that promotes sustainable socio-economic growth in South Africa. As part of the Gauteng Province’s Integrated Transport Master Plan 2025 and together with the Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Dr Ismail Vadi, further extensions to the Gauteng rapid rail integrated network are to be developed. This will increase commuter accessibility and mobility throughout Gauteng, reducing congestion on roads and in turn decreasing the environmental impact.
