Tony Koenderman, founder and long-time editor of AdFocus, the Financial Mail’s advertising annual, died this week. Koenderman had been in intensive care for some time after complications arising from an operation for a broken leg.Koenderman reported on the advertising and communications industry for more than 35 years. Respected for his honest assessment of the sector, he was arguably the first SA journalist to recognise advertising’s economic importance and report on it from a business perspective.After AdFocus, Koenderman launched a rival, AdReview, which he edited until ill health took its toll about three years ago.In 2015 he received the AdFocus lifetime achievement award. The same year, he was inducted into the Loeries Hall of Fame.Tony is survived by his wife Christine, and children Tonya, Samantha and Gregory.
