Former Eskom CEO Brian Molefe has been nominated to fill a vacancy on the ANC’s list of MPs from the North West. In a statement on Friday, Parliament said its presiding officers would determine a date for swearing him in as an MP. It had been widely speculated that should Molefe become an MP, it would be the first step to his being appointed finance minister, to replace Pravin Gordhan, who is regarded as holding the government’s purse strings with too firm a hand. In its brief statement late on Friday, Parliament acknowledged that Molefe had been nominated to take up a position on the ANC benches. “Parliament wishes to acknowledge the nomination of Mr Brian Molefe, to fill a vacancy on the North West list of ANC MPs, which is depleted. Presiding officers of Parliament will determine a date for swearing him in as an MP,” the party said in the statement.
