IT’S getting so that the quality of “intelligence” being hawked around the ANC just isn’t worth the paper it’s written on. Take the debacle involving Remgro chairman Johann Rupert. Last week, the Sowetan and City Press revealed that at the ANC’s recent national executive committee meeting, Jacob Zuma had told the party how a Rupert family member had met an “ANC official” to express “market unhappiness” over David Des van Rooyen’s appointment as finance minister.That ANC official was supposedly deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa. The point of the story was to illustrate how “white capital” was also seeking to influence cabinet appointments, not only the Guptas.Coincidentally, an article published in the Gupta-owned New Age on the eve of that ANC meeting reported that Rupert had “summoned Ramaphosa to a meeting”, where he was “told in no uncertain terms that Zuma should reverse his appointment of Van Rooyen”.
