BOBBY JORDANA SOUTH African warship came under fire for the first time in the democratic era two weeks ago — from one of its own.The SA Navy confirmed that the naval strike craft SAS Isaac Dyobha accidentally fired at the fleet‘s supply ship, the SAS Drakensberg, damaging the port deck.The incident occurred during the high-profile Armed Forces Day military exhibition in Port Elizabeth, attended by President Jacob Zuma and 25000 members of the public.Naval spokesman Zamo Sithole confirmed the incident.“The details ... are currently under investigation,” Sithole said.Sources confirmed that:* The strike craft accidentally discharged while trying to clear a blockage;* The practice round struck the SAS Drakensberg, causing a deep dent on Deck 1; and* Navy protocol says the gun should have been cleared at sea.When The Times visited Simon‘s Town Naval Base on Thursday, the Drakensberg was berthed with her port section against the quay, hiding the damage.Sources said similar incidents occur...
