Nobody wants a good time to end. We humans are inherently programmed to favour continuance over change, especially, but curiously not necessarily, if it’s pleasurable. Altering the status quo is supposed to be unsettling and disruptive and leave us feeling out of sorts, at odds with ourselves and those around us. It’s stress inducing enough for companies to use change management specialists to implement corporate changes. Old habits die hard, goes the adage, along with don’t fix it if it ain’t broke. Resistance to change is real, making changes is hard. Very hard. Ask therapists treating patients trying to alter socially unacceptable behaviour; ask addicts trying to give up the substance of their abuse – drugs, drink, gambling, sex… My lovely dad linked the fear of change to the fear of death.
