I woke up the day after Valentine’s Day, to the news that President Jacob Zuma had resigned in the night, while I slept. Hooray. In the dark of my bedroom at 5am, I did a jig as I put on my running shoes, stopping to marvel at how long we have had to endure this man’s reign of corruption and looting and venality and spite. Did this mean we would never again be forced to witness his mirthless He He He his smile never reaching those cold reptilian eyes?A coal of hope burned in my chest. I looked at my phone and there were 10 Whatsapp messages from friends who’d stayed up to hear his resignation speech. Three friends sent me Zapiro’s cartoon – a brilliant depiction of him retiring his signature Zuma shower with the words End of and Error. The relief was palpable, a nation that has been holding its breath for a long time exhaled. The Rand did a jig too firming to R11.66 to the Dollar.
