Ludwig van Beethoven, citing the Messiah, called its composer George Frideric Handel the “greatest composer that ever lived”. In 1741 Handel composed the Messiah as an Easter offering, with a scriptural text taken from the King James Bible and from the Psalms found in the Book of Common Prayer. It’s not surprising that this work has become one of the best known, most frequently performed choral works in Western music. It’s magnificent and I am listening to it as I write this.The work first played on April 13 1742 and ladies were asked by management to wear dresses “without Hoops” so more people could fit into the Musick Hall in Dublin. Handel was a man who could lay claim to as much adoration and fame and attention as any person who lived.
