Communication is the national public broadcaster’s chief function: to keep the nation informed and entertained is its mission statement. We pay the SABC, through our tax dollars, to communicate to us what is happening in our country, and the world. They have not done that. Instead they have doctored what it is we see, often giving us a government – ANC? – approved view of our world so that our exposure to the news is limited and biased. Also, there has been a shocking waste of our money, tales of woeful administrative mismanagement, intimidation of staff and all round gross neglect in the implementation of their mandate. So it was pitiful to see communication reduced to a game of broken telephone this week as lip quivering Comms Minister Faith Muthambi petulantly said: It’s not my fault.
