Position overview

Business Day and the Financial Mail are looking for a Finance and Business Writer, focusing on the financial services sector. We’re seeking an applicant with a track record of news, analysis and sharp analytical pieces. Storytelling, scoops and the pursuit of ambitious stories are encouraged. Applicants should have a demonstrated knowledge of business and finance and be able to drive day-to-day coverage, company earnings, fast-moving breaking news and enterprise stories. The successful candidate will provide content for both print and online, and must be an active participant on social media, or at least demonstrate a working knowledge of digital platforms.  

Main responsibilities/outcomes 

  • Produce well-written, relevant, accurate and balanced news stories;
  • Establish and maintain communication with contacts with a view to sourcing stories;
  • Work to established style and deadlines;
  • Ensure delivery of high quality stories;
  • Perform any other duty as is reasonably assigned by the companies desk;
  • An ability to manage multiple stories simultaneously under strict deadlines and to weigh in quickly with smart analysis;
  • Resourcefulness, attention to detail and the ability to file with speed, accuracy and clarity;
  • Proven ability to write clearly and authoritatively; and
  • Receptiveness to feedback and openness to change.

Minimum qualifications and requirements

  • Relevant diploma/degree;
  • At least five years’ experience in journalism;
  • A demonstrated knowledge of finance and business;
  • Excellent news-gathering, research and writing skills;
  • Ability to work accurately under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Unimpeachable integrity;
  • A solid contact base; and
  • Ability to travel and work irregular hours.

Personal skills/attributes 

  • Be self-motivated with an ability to work within a team; and
  • A valid driver’s licence.

Position overview

We are looking for a senior reporter to identify, investigate and write in-depth unique business news reports of national interest for Business Times and related platforms.

 Main responsibilities 

  • Break unique hard news stories ahead of competitors.
  • Identify and pursue investigative business journalism pieces.
  • Write news features and analysis pieces.
  • Establish and maintain an extensive contact base with senior executives in business and key people in government with a view to sourcing stories.
  • Work to established style and deadlines.
  • Ensure delivery of high-quality stories.
  • Perform any other duty as is reasonably assigned by line manager.

Requirements

  • Relevant Diploma/Degree or equivalent.
  • At least 10 years’ experience in journalism.

Required skills

Digital audience analyst: editorial

Reporting to: Head of data

Department: Group digital

Location:Parktown, Johannesburg 

Position overview

We are looking for a digital audience analyst to work with our dynamic digital team across our websites, including TimesLIVE, SowetanLIVE, BusinessLIVE, HeraldLIVE, DispatchLIVE and more.

Main responsibilities 

  • Compiling daily, weekly and monthly analytical reports about Arena Holdings’ digital platforms – websites, apps, social media channels and multimedia.
  • Deriving actionable insights from the data and using these insights to drive content strategy.
  • Report automation and dashboarding.
  • Compiling one-off analytical reports about Arena Holdings’ digital platforms as required by the digital audience manager, digital editorial and product teams, or other business units.
  • Briefing digital editorial and product teams on insights gained from these reports.
  • Setting up, monitoring and managing paid marketing campaigns on social media, especially on Facebook and Twitter.
  • Liaising with other departments on digital marketing support for sales and subscriptions campaigns, events and so forth.
  • Weekend and after-hours work will be required at times.

Required skills/attributes:

  • Strong English-language writing and communication skills.

  • Digitally savvy, with knowledge of social media trends and digital news distribution.

  • Experience in using digital analytics tools such as Google Analytics, Cxense, Chartbeat and Narratiive, and social media platforms’ own analytics tools.

  • Knowledge of presentation creation in programs such as Keynote and PowerPoint, and the ability to present analytical reports in a clear and concise way.

  • Self-motivated team player.

Skills that would be an advantage:

  • Experience in a digital role in a newsroom.
  • Experience in editorial highly advantageous.
  • Experience in Datastudio
  • Working knowledge of SQL and BigQuery
  • Knowledge of basic image editing in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

Qualifications and experience:

  • At least 2–3 years’ experience in a digital analytics or digital marketing role within a newsroom.
