A crowd including senior executives of major corporations formed the "People’s Assembly" at St Albans Cathedral in Tshwane on Wednesday morning. The event was originally planned as a protest march to the magistrate’s court where Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan had been expected to appear on Wednesday. However, with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) having dropped charges against Gordhan on Monday, the march has become an assembly. It will be addressed by ANC stalwarts — who include Barbara Hogan and Cheryl Carolus — as well as representatives of all the opposition parties, faith organisations, labour and other civil society groups. Organisers include Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution chairman and Save SA convener Sipho Pityana. The CEOs’ participation follows a pledge that more than 100 have signed committing them to support for the Constitution and good governance and to combating corruption.
