More Cosatu-affiliated unions may follow Tuesday’s call by the National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) for President Jacob Zuma to resign, says political analyst Zamikhaya Maseti. Nehawu, the largest public sector union with 235‚000 members, became the first Cosatu union on Tuesday to call publicly for Zuma’s head. Maseti says the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) could be the second Cosatu union to call on Zuma to step down. He says Nehawu’s call was also a sign of shrinking support for Cosatu president Sdumo Dlamini‚ who backs Zuma. "The ground is really shifting under Dlamini." Maseti says it is doubtful Zuma will resign voluntarily, despite calls from various sectors of society. But pressure on him would increase if ANC branches back the demands.
