The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) has called on President Jacob Zuma to resign. Nehawu is the largest member union of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and among its most influential affiliates. Its call on Tuesday comes amid growing opposition to Zuma within the ANC and its alliance partners. Most Cosatu affiliates made clear they wanted Zuma to step down at a central executive committee meeting after the 2016 local elections, to assess the causes of the party’s eight percentage point decline. However, that discussion was held behind closed doors and was not made public.
