Finance minister says additional funding was allocated to the Electoral Commission of SA as it prepared for the local government elections

The Electoral Commission of SA’s (IEC’s) tardiness in preparing and securing the local government election cost SA more than R71m, said Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan when he delivered his medium-term budget policy statement on Wednesday. His comments came two months after a gruelling test for the IEC in concluding the local government elections. The commission found itself in a tough spot when the Constitutional Court declared that the voters roll had to include physical addresses for voters just months before the poll.
