The Electoral Commission of SA’s (IEC’s) tardiness in preparing and securing the local government election cost SA more than R71m, said Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan when he delivered his medium-term budget policy statement on Wednesday. His comments came two months after a gruelling test for the IEC in concluding the local government elections. The commission found itself in a tough spot when the Constitutional Court declared that the voters roll had to include physical addresses for voters just months before the poll.
