The Gauteng provincial government owes municipalities R458m in rates and taxes across the province. This was revealed by Gauteng premier David Makhura on Tuesday in response to a question in the legislature. "Between 1 April and 30 September 2016‚ the provincial government paid a total of R587m towards debt owed to municipalities‚" said Makhura. "The outstanding debt to municipalities has been reduced to R458m. The average age of the debt is reduced from 120 days to 30 days. This is tremendous progress compared to where we were in November 2015." A debt-management team was established to deal with indebtedness to municipalities. From 2014-15 to 2015-16‚ facilitated payments totalling R2-billion were made to councils with the debt-management committee’s help. Makhura said billing disputes had delayed payment.
