THE Gauteng provincial government’s executive committee has decided to auction about 1,000 "noncore" properties to help it cut costs and boost efficiency.In a response to TMG Digital queries‚ Gauteng’s infrastructure development department spokesman Theo Nkonki said: "The properties have been identified in the asset register."He said a department investigation identified 1,000 properties with dwellings and vacant residential land to be auctioned online.Last week‚ Gauteng premier David Makhura said 31 residential properties owned by the Gauteng government‚ including the premier’s official residence‚ would be auctioned this month.Makhura has not lived at the official residence‚ despite millions of rands spent on it during the premiership of Nomvula Mokanyane, now water affairs and sanitation minister.He said two years ago this mansion would be used to host official events‚ while he remained at his own home.The property was bought for R11.4m in 2004.
