Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) head Robert McBride has praised the country’s democracy, saying it had ensured he was cleared of charges against him. A visibly confident McBride on Wednesday made his first presentation to Parliament’s portfolio committee on police since his suspension at Ipid lapsed. McBride appeared in Parliament along with his team from Ipid to brief the police committee on the progress that the directorate had made in implementing Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu’s action plan. He returned to the helm of Ipid following court judgments that ruled his suspension by Police Minister Nathi Nhleko was unconstitutional. The minister unsuccessfully attempted to get Parliament to institute an inquiry into McBride’s conduct, which would empower the minister to suspend McBride again.
