Shaun Abrahams tight-lipped and recalcitrant on Pravin Gordhan charges
The NPA head declines to be drawn on the matter before he appears before Parliament’s justice committee, but did reiterate that he will not resign
National Director of Public Prosecutions Shaun Abrahams kept tight-lipped on Thursday, ahead of his meeting with Parliament’s portfolio committee on justice and correctional services. The committee has asked him to appear before it on Friday morning to explain the circumstances surrounding the withdrawal of charges against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and two other former senior SARS officials. The NPA head this week backtracked from the decision to pursue fraud charges against Gordhan. If the committee wishes, it has the power to recommend to the National Assembly that Abrahams be suspended. Only President Jacob Zuma has the power to remove Abrahams, and even then it must be done after Abrahams is deemed to be unfit, improper of guilty of misconduct ahead of the removal.
