Speaker of the National Assembly Baleka Mbete has refused a request by the Democratic Alliance for a debate on the politicisation of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).The request for the debate was made in the context of the NPA’s dogged pursuit of a fraud charge against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan -widely regarded amongst legal experts as lacking any foundation -while no action has been taken with regard to the over 750 charges of corruption laid at the door of President Jacob Zuma.DA chief whip John Steenhuisen said Mbete’s decision demonstrated that she would do "everything possible to shield Jacob Zuma from scrutiny and accountability."The DA has also submitted a request for an urgent debate on a motion of no confidence in the president but has not yet received a reply from Mbete."Reports today which detail how the National Director of Public Prosecution (NDPP), Shaun Abrahams, met with President Jacob Zuma at Luthuli House a day before initiating flimsy fraud and the...
