Rob Rose correctly questions the ethics of the medical aid industry and the effectiveness of the Council for Medical Schemes in "A System On Its Sick Bed" (Editor’s Note, February 28-March 6). I too have some questions for the council: • The "self-payment gap" is in fact an additional cost of cover. Should it not be presented as such? • The "co-payment" is in fact an excess. Should it not be presented as such? • Since the "self-payment gap" was introduced, gap cover products have become available.
