Your editorial, “Does Ramaphosa have the appetite” (Editorials, January 19-25), was a little skewed in some respects.
Cyril Ramaphosa has not been a welcome break from the norm. He appears to have gained his huge wealth through political connections.
Ramaphosa is wily and intelligent and would be a welcome change from Jacob Zuma. But he will not necessarily be SA’s saviour. He’ll be beholden to party bosses and he hasn’t shown he is his own man. So placing him alongside Donald Trump bears no real comparison. The latter is a maverick, unpredictable and independent of political convention.
Your view that Trump was as stunned as Hillary Clinton when his win was announced doesn’t match what he had predicted — he had claimed his victory would astound his critics.
Whether Trump will prove a better-than-average leader remains to be seen, but he has shown he has steel in his spine.
