If Hollard backed some comparative unknowns in its direct insurer Naked, its IToo venture is brimming with insurance legends. Perhaps in 20 years’ time Sumarie Greybe and Alex Thomson at Naked will also be legends. But if few people in the insurance industry have heard of IToo, they will all know former Hollard CEO Paolo Cavalieri and former FD Rob Hallier. Cavalieri took over Hollard about 20 years ago and certainly contrasts with his predecessor, Miles Japhet. Japhet is known for his Swiss-chocolate smoothness, perfectly equipped for silver-tongued talk in the boardroom. Cavalieri, on the other hand, is so down to earth you can imagine him playing cards at a bar in the hills of southern Italy. Cavalieri and Hallier reinvented themselves when they formed Etana, a commercial insurer in which Hollard was just a minority shareholder. The trouble is, it was so successful Hollard decided to buy them out. It is certainly a strength of Hollard that if it makes a mistake it can correct it ...
