For some strange reason, I remember the first time scammers threw me the line about having won some impossible amount of money. It wasn’t yet a common ploy and I had heard of no-one else being sent such a message. Though I was tempted to toy with the sender of the e-mail, cynicism or common sense prevailed and I deleted it.

Phishing scams are now so common, however, that I was surprised to read a judgment last week claiming to be the first time a court in SA had dealt with the fruit of such a fraud in relation to banks...
