I’ve been surprised by the number of complaints I field from employers saying that the institutions regulating labour relations too often see theft and fraud among employees as relatively trivial issues, not worthy of dismissal. They say this may create an atmosphere in which employees feel they have impunity to steal at work or act dishonestly towards their employers. Against this background, one of the labour appeal court’s first 2017 decisions is encouraging, giving notice to workers, employers and the bodies involved in resolution of workplace disputes that dishonesty will be treated extremely seriously.Bidserv Industrial Products, the aggrieved company, runs a bursary scheme for its employees, with a special committee deciding on eligibility.
