Our politicians need to become more ambitious. They are embarrassing us. Criminals across the globe must be having a right old guffaw at us right now. Why? Because they take such puny bribes. Look at our public enterprises minister and her associates. I mean, really? The Sunday Times reports minister Lynne Brown’s longtime lover and a close associate scored oil tenders from Eskom despite having no expertise in the industry. The newspaper said E Smart Solutions, owned by the minister’s partner, Ingrid Tufvesson, and Michelle McMaster, the mother of Brown’s former personal assistant, Kim Davids, "scored two contracts worth R1.2m in just five months this year". The other director of the company is Davids’s sister, Serisa Bernice Davids. It’s a scandal. No, not the fact that they took money, but that they compromised themselves, their families, their reputations and the reputation of our country — for a mere R1.2m.
