What is it with South Africans and chairs? The humble chair has now become one of the most potent symbols of our decline as a country. Two weeks ago the Eastern Cape ANC conference descended into chaos as warring delegates threw chairs at each other. It was horrendous. The faction of the conference that supported President Jacob Zuma did not like being outplayed and outnumbered by the Cyril Ramaphosa faction.So they took their plastic chairs and rained them down in a sustained five-minute attack on the other side. Nine people were treated in hospital. The incident frightened the usually docile DA delegates to the party’s Western Cape elective conference so much that their chairs were bolted to the floor. Say what you will about the DA, at least it prepares for all eventualities. The chair has not just become a symbol of the failure of our party politics, but an emblem of our corruption too.
