I love it when investment gurus talk about the "new normal". They mean we have settled into whatever sad state we are in. The new normal is President Jacob Zuma wailing that his enemies have tried to poison him not once but three times. Or that fewer than 50% of our 400 MPs actually think he should be in office. The new normal is that we think subpar is okay. We think 27% unemployment and 0.5% economic growth is good enough for the president to stay in office.Do I sound negative? I apologise. You see, I don’t buy this rubbish that we all have to look on the bright side even when the new normal is what we should call it: mediocre. Look around you and weep, people. It’s dire. And don’t tell me about Donald Trump. Or Kim Jong-un. Or Vladimir Putin. Just because the rest of the world is scraping the bottom of the barrel doesn’t mean we have to fish in the same slime.
