One of the pleasures of passing through London, however briefly, is always an opportunity to catch up with British politics and the wonderful writing and commentary. It’s some respite from the heat of home in SA. If only we could be more like them, sort of thing. Not any longer. I at least understand our politics, frightening as they may be. The hot topic in London, as it has been for more than a year, is Brexit, the mad idea that Britain should withdraw from the European Union, the richest trading bloc in the world. A 2016 referendum, narrowly won, backed Brexit and the country has, under the agreements it signed on joining, to leave by the end of March next year. I grew up believing that the British were the most rational of people, that their politics were, though often savage, mostly thoughtful, democratic and rational.
