I had a very interesting response to my remarks here yesterday about a dirty Twitter war being mounted by people around the Gupta family against commentators who, like me, are critical of the way the family has “captured” the president and thus parts of the state. I mentioned Ferial Haffajee, Alec Hogg and Ranjeni Munusamy as other victims. I’m sure there are more. My assumption was that the highly organised way the Gupta Twitter army behaves (for instance, someone will dream up something to say about me and within seconds 15 other people — most with very few followers — will have retweeted it) was the work of the British public relations firm employed by the Guptas to burnish their reputation here, Bell Pottinger. Frequently, one of the retweeters will be Atul Gupta himself.
