If you’re a commentator critical of the way the Gupta family has been able to capture great swathes of the state though its ties to President Jacob Zuma, you will by now have become an object of interest for a public relations firm called Bell Pottinger of London. Three or four bright white young things spend a lot of time toing and froing from SA to the UK trying to burnish the image of the Guptas and their associates. One of the things Bell Pottinger has managed to do is to create a virtual army of Twitter profiles who bombard people like me or Ranjeni Munusamy or Ferial Haffajee or Alec Hogg (notice no actual black African Gupta critics, of which there are many, and many very fine ones, are targeted). The Twitter profiles then try to blast the Twittersphere with insults and accusations.
