ANN CROTTY: SA keeps on keeping on
So many of us defy our leaders by just doing our jobs
Each day, I emerge tentatively from my little cottage expecting to bear witness to some sort of postapocalyptic vision of a society that has just imploded. I’m not really sure what that might look like — rubbish strewn in the streets, windows broken, gates swinging on hinges, cars abandoned, and surly citizens glowering at me. (At least that’s how it looks on TV.) But I live in a quiet, middle-class suburb, so this is never what greets me; even as I make my way to the nearby mall there’s no evidence of postapocalyptic horror — the streets are almost pristine and nearly all the citizens I encounter offer a smile. What is going on? How can things be so normal? Do people not know we’re on the precipice?I read newspapers and watch TV, and with each news cycle it is evident that large chunks of government aren’t working, and that a disturbing number of cabinet ministers are determined to do little more than seek out opportunities for self-advancement and enrichment.
