I’d like to take this chance to say to finance minister Pravin Gordhan, if he’s planning to hike personal income tax this month: don’t think about it. It’s not that I’ve come to the end of my tether. I ran out of tether months ago. I’m so deficient in tether I’m even beginning to think that all the fancy tourists (with their fancy dollars, and euros, and pounds, and renminbi) are eating me out of house and home. Having abandoned any hope of being able to afford a meal out in New York, Paris, London or Beijing I have discovered I can hardly afford one here in my own backyard.My favourite eateries are now wall-to-wall with tourists who are thrilled they can afford such great food and service at such reasonable dollar-translated prices; the same prices that seem to me to be about 20% steeper than 12 months ago.
