Last week the World Movement for Democracy (WMD) held its 12th global assembly in Joburg, ostensibly to commemorate 30 years of South Africa’s democracy and celebrate democratic resilience and innovation, all while building greater unity to counter the challenges facing democracy around the world today.

I say ostensibly, because Independent Media (company slogan: “Making dictatorships fun again”), ran a series of stories revealing that in fact this was really about “foreign peddling” and that its aims could be “to destabilise the national security and stability of the nation”...
