Open Secrets has shone a worrying light on the way South Africa’s real estate industry makes it easy for corrupt dictators to launder their wealth

The ominously named (if you’re a corrupt businessperson or politician, that is) nonprofit Open Secrets has just released a report called “For Sale: SA’s Property Laundromat (https://www.opensecrets.org.za/for-sale-south-africas-property-laundromat/)”.
Open Secrets is based at Community House in Salt River, Cape Town, and that’s where I went last week for the launch event. The last time I’d been at the venue was more than 20 years ago, to attend a wedding, and it was comforting to see that not much had changed about the slightly tired, homespun building...
