The success of jazz festivals in Cape Town and Johannesburg and at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown has inspired the Jazz Foundation of SA with the idea of an annual event for SA’s capital city. As a result, the inaugural Tshwane International Big Band Festival, with a stellar line-up of music luminaries, will take place in December. Among the local talent appearing at the two-day concert will be Caiphus Semenya, Madala Kunene, Herbie Tsoaeli, Simphiwe Dana, Nduduzo Makhathini, Feya Faku and Marcus Wyatt. Performing alongside them will be an equally stellar foreign contingent — US-based jazz performers Stefon Harris, Salim Washington and Kenny Garrett as well as Dutch national Paul van Kemenade. And the artists will perform with a big band drawn from a pool of talented local musicians.
