Gauteng’s monthly antique fairs — at Nelson Mandela Square and Hyde Park Corner in Johannesburg and Brooklyn Square in Pretoria — have become famous among residents, especially at this time of the year. Cape Town will now have its own, with the National Cape Antique Fair set to be held at the Great Cellar of the Alphen Estate in Constantia from November 17-19.

The Great Cellar is home to Stephan Welz Auctioneers, which has partnered with the fair organisers to hold daily valuations, at which the public can have treasured heirlooms valued. It is not unusual to find that "that old thing" stuffed at the back of a cupboard or that was in storage for decades is in fact a rare piece of furniture, a valuable painting or a Cape silver collectable.

For those just shopping, there will be a trove of antique furniture, silverware, jewellery and art on sale, as well as vintage clothing, costume jewellery and Art Deco pieces. Other than contemporary artworks and those by SA masters, there will also be a rare Picasso drawing, a Maud Sumner oil, a Tinus de Jongh and a Gregoire Boonzaier painting on sale.

• The opening-night cocktail event, from 7pm to 9pm on Thursday, November 16, costs R100 a person. Booking is essential.
