Junior reporters

 

Reporting to: Companies Editor

Location: Parktown, Johannesburg

Department: Business Day and BusinessLIVE

 

Position overview

To identify, investigate and write news reports and analysis of companies and markets to further strengthen Business Day’s leadership in reporting on and explaining the political economy.

Main responsibilities/outcomes

  • Break compelling news.
  • Identify and pursue relevant enterprise stories.
  • Focus on listed companies and other stakeholders in the political economy, such as SOEs.
  • Establish and maintain an extensive contact base with senior contacts in all sectors and key people in government, SOEs and the private sector.
  • Work to style and deadlines.
  • Deliver work of unimpeachable integrity.
  • Perform any other duty as is reasonably assigned by the companies desk and news desk.
  • Contribute to improved coverage of markets.

Requirements

  • 1-3 years’ experience
  • A diploma / degree or experience-based equivalent.
  • Excellent command of written English.
  • A demonstrable interest and enthusiasm for the impact companies and markers can have on society.
  • Highly motivated individuals able to work both independently and be a team player.
  • Irregular hours may be required.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and projects.

The ideal candidate must have the following attributes

  • Interpersonal skills, attention to detail, deadline-driven.
  • A good understanding of economics.
  • A valid driver’s licence.
  • Motivated and interested.

Economics Reporter

Position overview

To identify, investigate and write news reports, opinion and analysis on economic data, economic indicators and the political economy to further strengthen Business Day’s leadership in this field.

Main responsibilities/outcomes

  • Report quickly and accurately on economic data and indicators, as well as the political economy.
  • Provide value-added insight and analysis.
  • Establish and maintain an extensive contact base with key people in government, SOEs and the private sector.
  • Pitch story ideas and accept assignments from editors.
  • Attend regular editorial meetings.
  • Contribute to BDTV’s economics coverage.
  • Work to style and deadlines.
  • Deliver work of unimpeachable integrity.

Requirements

  • Excellent all-round ability in written and spoken English;
  • Relevant tertiary qualification.
  • At least five years’ experience.
  • Attention to detail.
  • The ability to establish and maintain relationships with credible sources of information.
  • Highly motivated and able to work both independently and as a team player.
  • Good research abilities.
  • A thorough knowledge of journalistic ethics and media law.

Candidates should also have

  • A wide-ranging interest in economics, politics. and the political economy.
  • An understanding of economics and key aspects of economic theory and practice.
  • A broad general knowledge.
