In a blow to the ANC, the son of activists Yusuf and Amina Cachalia, Ghaleb Cachalia, is to be announced as the Democratic Alliance mayoral candidate in Ekurhuleni tomorrow, the Financial Mail can reveal.Cachalia applied for the position and went through the DA electoral college process before he was selected for the post, according to independent sources linked to the family. An official announcement is likely to be made on Tuesday.Cachalia’s parents were close to former president Nelson Mandela. His mother Amina detailed her relationship with Mandela in her autobiography, When Hope and History Rhyme.The ANC will have its work cut out for it in the upcoming local government elections, which are expected to be hotly contested. Ekurhuleni has boasted one of the highest voter registration numbers, with over 30,000 new voters registering this month for the municipal elections.
