2019 elections: DA shaping up for battle
With a general election rapidly approaching, the party is getting ready to formulate and finalise important issues — from diversity to politicisation of leadership — at its congress in Pretoria
With barely a year to go until the general elections there will not be much time or space for SA’s political parties to make broad changes to their leadership, the way they function and their stance on crucial issues. The DA, however, will try to do this in some aspects as it prepares for its federal congress in Pretoria this month. The debate about diversity in the party has already spilt over into the public domain, while the power of the DA’s nonpolitical officials and making it easier to remove stubborn politicians from office will also form part of what will be pushed at the congress. Mmusi Maimane will continue to be the face of the DA when he leads it into the 2019 election campaign, as he stands unopposed for the position of federal leader. Federal executive council chairman James Selfe will also keep his position, which can only be described as the equivalent of a secretary-general with extraordinary powers.
