Hyundai is helping set the international pace in sustainable motoring. Having made huge strides in hydrogen fuel-cell technology, the Korean car maker is now also setting its sights on leadership in electric vehicles. Hyundai has become a major player in the SA new-vehicle market, overturning the convention that sales are dominated by local manufacturers. But its success here has been based on the traditional petrol-and diesel-powered internal combustion engine. Globally, it’s a different story. In 2005, Hyundai opened its Eco-Technology Research Institute in Seoul. Its primary goals are to reduce exhaust emissions, create core technology for mass production of fuel-cell and hybrid vehicles, and reduce the use of air and water in vehicle manufacturing.
