Impala Platinum (Implats), the world’s second-largest producer of the metal, continued to be affected by government-ordered safety stoppages at its South African mines in the September quarter but is pushing hard to minimise these disruptions. Implats increased refined platinum output to 365,000oz in the three months to the end of September, the first quarter in its 2017 financial year, compared to 304,100oz in the same quarter a year earlier. At the Rustenburg mines, Implats generated 151,000oz, up from 123,000oz before, but production could have been higher, said CEO Terence Goodlace, who leaves the company at the end of November.
