Many sceptics or critics of the government of national unity (GNU) see its questionable longevity as the main reason for its negative outlook. Longevity is important, but so is the question of efficacy. 

The GNU may last until the next elections, five years away, as each partner stands to lose a lot if they walk away. The primary reason all the partners are with the ANC is state power. Therefore, it doesn’t make sense that they would walk away from the only thing they get from the relationship. President Cyril Ramaphosa is lucky in that respect, as he has more power than any other president before him, as the parties give him 70% of parliament’s seats. ..
