I am increasingly coming across individuals who are becoming more comfortable with the idea of pursuing their entrepreneurial aspirations sooner rather than later, whether it is shifting away from job seeking to self-employment or forecasting for the long-overdue exit from full-time employment. I think this is a great mentality to have in South Africa as I still believe that entrepreneurship will be one of the main levers for addressing the job creation issue. Entrepreneurship stands to convert job seekers into job creators - not just for themselves but for others who are unemployed today. Often the ideas are ready and the passion is alive and strong, but there remains the major hiccup of wanting to wait for the external funding that will help you get started. This waiting process can be quite long as existing investors are either waiting for the idea to get some traction before considering it or the individuals themselves have not yet reached investor-ready status.
