The South African Revenue Service (Sars) has increased its filing threshold to reduce the number of tax returns it has to process each year.

"Sars estimates that several million taxpayers will not be required to file tax returns, which means far less work for Sars and, hopefully, more time to focus on more important issues," says Thomas Lobban, a tax consultant at Tax Consulting SA.
