Any listicle on how to do better at work is likely to emphasise the importance of networking, even for introverts. But Lyndy van den Barselaar, ManpowerGroup SA's MD, warns that networking for the sake of it can be dangerous. She has advice on how to avoid some networking mistakes: • Networking is not a team sport. Do not be tempted to take a friend along as it is not a social event, this is about work. "The idea behind networking is to be social, but it's a goal-driven social event, meaning you should go alone so you will not be tempted to spend more time with your friend than your new acquaintances." • The reason you attend an event is to meet people who may be able to help your career, so you cannot stand shyly on the outskirts. • Practise good conversation by asking questions about the people you meet. • Dress and behave appropriately.
