Nearly 50 years after engineers began to dream about a massive hydroelectric power scheme that would "light up Africa", the head of the African Development Bank (AfDB) has pledged to turn words into deeds.

During a site visit to the proposed Grand Inga hydropower scheme near the mouth of the Congo River last month, AfDB president Akinwumi Adesina said his bank had secured nearly $90m (about R1.3bn) for the project so far, and would continue to mobilise further funding.
